EFDC in China
Paul Craig, DSI Chief Consultant, made a presentation looking at the development history of EFDC at the inaugural iSymWater conference in Beijing on 8 July, 2019. EFDC continues to be a key tool for water quality modeling in China.
It is exciting to see that several new books that have recently been published featuring EFDC, as well as EEMS, in China.
Professor Li Yiping of Hohai University has now published his surface water modeling book, “Surface water computational environmental modeling and prediction – EFDC modeling techniques and case studies.” Gong Ran and Paul Craig are co-authors of this study which provides detailed guidance in how to set-up and calibrate an EFDC model using Chinese waterbodies.
Zhen Gang Ji’s “Hydrodynamics and Water Quality – Modeling Rivers, Lakes, and Estuaries” came out in its second edition on 2017. It has recently been translated into Chinese and will be published soon.
The China EPA also recently published guidelines for environmental impact assessments with examples and recommendation on applications of EFDC. The book is titled “Numerical Simulation Method and Application of Surface Water Environmental Impact Assessment” by Chen Kaiqi, Jiang Xunbo, China EPA, (2018)
An annual conference is now held in May each year that focuses on surface water modeling and EFDC is one of the most commonly discussed models. Academic users are continuing research and develop new features for the code and an increasing number of papers published using EFDC and EFDC+
